The Los Angeles Dodgers began their final regular season series on the road with a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners thanks to a strong outing from their bullpen for most of the night.
Emmet Sheehan made the start, but things started out rough for both him and the Dodgers. After a leadoff single on a soft ground ball, Sheehan threw a wild pitch to move Randy Arozarena up to second.
Julio Rodriguez reached on an error by Michael Conforto that made it a 1-0 lead for the Mariners. Sheehan then made an error of his own, throwing the ball away on a pickoff attempt.
But Sheehan ended up striking out the next two hitters to end the inning. That was the only inning Sheehan worked as he prepares to move into a bullpen role, and he finished with one unearned run allowed with three strikeouts.
The Dodgers ended up going with a full bullpen audition in the game. Justin Wrobleski tossed two innings, Will Klein worked 1.2, Anthony Banda threw 1.1 and Roki Sasaki pitched one, all of them keeping the Mariners off the board through seven innings.
The offense was somewhat quiet for the Dodgers with a post-clinch-day lineup in the game, but they did enough to win. Dalton Rushing singled and scored on a home run from Kiké Hernández in the third inning to put them up 2-1.
The Dodgers extended their lead in the sixth inning when Rushing drove in Conforto, who reached on a walk and advanced to second on a single from Teoscar Hernández. That proved to be the game-winning RBI.
Blake Treinen and Tanner Scott’s struggles continue for Dodgers
Blake Treinen entered in the eighth inning, and once again it proved to be a challenge for the right-hander. He allowed a leadoff walk and two-out single to set the stage for the Mariners, then Dominic Canzone singled home a run to cut the Dodgers’ lead to one run.
Treinen then battled with J.P. Crawford on a 10-pitch at-bat, but forced a lineout to end the inning.
Tanner Scott, who has had significant struggles of his own, worked the ninth inning. He retired the first two hitters, but then allowed a double to Cal Raleigh before Rodriguez was intentionally walked and Mitch Garver was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Scott ended up striking out Eugenio Suárez to end the game, but the inning did not provide much confidence for a potential turnaround.
