The Los Angeles Dodgers had their six-game winning streak snapped in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It also marked the first time this season the Dodgers lost the first game of a series this season, and ended a 16-game winning streak in head-to-head meetings with the Pirates.

Julio Urías again was efficient despite not retiring the side in order. He threw 82 pitches over six-plus innings, allowed a season-high 10 hits and exited with the Dodgers facing a 2-0 deficit.

Pittsburgh broke up the scoreless tie when a Michael Chavis leadoff triple in the fourth inning was followed by Yoshi Tsutsugo’s sacrifice fly. The Pirates appeared prime to add to their lead in the sixth inning when a base hit and double put two on with nobody out.

However, Urías retired the next three batters to escape the jam. Michael Perez chased him from the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Dodgers were shut out but it was not for lack of making hard contact throughout the night. Justin Turner was robbed of extra bases and potential RBI in the first inning, then he nearly had another double that would’ve tied the game as the ball land just foul down the left-field line.

Turner wound up grounding to third base on a 103.4 mph rocket, stranding two runners in the fifth inning.

In the fourth inning, Jake Marisnick made a diving catch in the left-center field gap to take a hit away from Hanser Alberto.

The Dodgers threatened in the seventh, when Gavin Lux walked and Mookie Betts followed with a blooper to put two on with one out. For Betts it extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

While the Dodgers failed to capitalize on their opportunities, the Pirates scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Those loomed large as Edwin Ríos led off the ninth with a home run to prevent the Dodgers from being shut out.

José Quintana allowed two hits and offset four walks by collecting five strikeouts over six shutout innings.

Dodgers lose Taylor early

Chris Taylor fouled a pitch off the inside of his left knee and was removed in the bottom of the sixth inning. The initial diagnosis was Taylor sustained a bone bruise.
