Recap: Cardinals Defeat Dodgers With Late Rally In Pitcher’s Duel

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost in a pitcher’s duel to the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, at Dodger Stadium after late rallies from both sides against the bullpens.

Tyler Glasnow turned in a stellar start despite battling through some early command issues. He pitched seven innings while allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking two.

The only run he allowed came in the form of a solo home run in the second inning off the bat of Masyn Winn that put the Cardinals up 1-0. Outside of that, Glasnow gave up just two singles in the outing.

The Dodgers tied it up in the fourth inning when Freddie Freeman blasted a solo home run, his 13th of the season. That was the only hit Sonny Gray allowed through seven innings.

The Dodgers only reached base one other time against Gray, a one-out walk from Max Muncy in the second inning, L.A. also struck out eight times as they were not able to get anything going against Gray.

Anthony Banda took over in the eighth inning and retired the first two hitters he faced. But Iván Herrera put the Cardinals up, 2-1, when he slugged a solo home run.

Like the Cardinals, the Dodgers also found some life when the starter came out of the game. Riley O’Brien replaced Gray in the eighth inning, and he was immediately greeted with a leadoff double from Teoscar Hernández.

Esteury Ruiz pinch-ran for Hernández, and he moved over to third on a groundout from Michael Conforto. The Dodgers tied it up when Andy Pages grounded out, allowing Ruiz to score.

Brock Stewart took over in the ninth and allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning. He then recorded the next two outs to keep the game scoreless, but the Cardinals were able to capitalize.

Yohel Perez blooped an RBI-single over second base to put the Cardinals up 3-2 and ended the outing for Stewart. It was one of two softly hit singles the right-hander allowed in his outing as he dealt with some poor luck.

Dodgers comeback attempt falls short in ninth

Shohei Ohtani started the Dodgers’ half of the ninth inning with a single, putting the tying run on base for the heart of the lineup. But Mookie Betts flied out softly to right field after a great catch from Lars Nootbaar, and Freeman struck out.

Will Smith ended up walking to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on base with two outs. Muncy worked a 3-2 count, but lined out to end the game, giving JoJo Romero the save.
