Recap: Blake Snell Strikes Out 11, Mookie Betts Hits Grand Slam As Dodgers Sweep Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Colorado Rockies with an 9-0 victory, backed by a stellar performance from Blake Snell and some timely hitting from the offense.

Snell gave the Dodgers six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks. He also struck out a season-high 11 batters.

The only time the Rockies put a runner in scoring position was in the fourth inning with two outs, which was the result of a walk and a stolen base by Ezequiel Tovar. Other than that, Snell only allowed two singles and didn’t allow them to advance.

Michael Kopech took over in the seventh, but after recording the first out, he walked three consecutive batters to load the bases. Alex Vesia was called upon and struck out the two hitters he faced to get the Dodgers out of the jam.

The Dodgers scored all their runs in the second inning, started by Tommy Edman reaching on an error. Miguel Rojas singled and Andy Pages doubled to drive in the first run of the game.

Kiké Hernández followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Dodgers up 2-0, and Shohei Ohtani singled home a run, as well. The inning was capped off by Mookie Betts doubling home Ohtani to give L.A. a four-run inning.

Betts broke the score open with some insurance in the eighth inning, hitting a grand slam for his fourth hit of the night. Betts also became the first Dodgers player to drive in multiple runs in five consecutive games since Matt Kemp in 2010.

The Dodgers loaded the bases after singles from Pages and Ben Rortvedt, while Ohtani reached on catcher’s interference.

Teoscar Hernández followed Betts by hitting a solo home run, giving the Dodgers back-to-back dingers and put them up by nine runs.

Rortvedt, who recorded two hits in the game, entered the lineup when Will Smith was scratched just before the game started.

The Dodgers announced Smith was removed from the lineup due to right hand soreness.

Smith was hit by the foul ball on Sept. 3 and wound up being removed from the game one inning later. He’s avoided the injured list to this point but been limited by a bone bruise.

In total, the Dodgers’ offense recorded 14 hits in the game, including the four from Betts, three from Pages, two each from Rojas and Rortvedt, and one each from Ohtani, Hernández and Edman.

Dodgers gain ground in NL West race

With the win, the Dodgers extended their lead in the National League West after the San Diego Padres lost earlier in the day.

The Dodgers now have a three-game lead over the Padres, and they also hold the tiebreaker, essentially adding another game to their lead.
