The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched another series win with an 8-6 victory against the San Diego Padres, setting themselves up to go for the series win on Wednesday as part of the four-game set.
The Dodgers hit three home runs to power their victory, with Andy Pages accounting for two of them and Will Smith blasting the go-ahead homer.
While the Dodgers had the final laugh, it was the Padres who jumped out to an early lead. With Jack Dreyer opening, Luis Arraez singled and scored on another single from Gavin Sheets.
The Dodgers tied it up and took the lead in the second inning when Smith hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Max Muncy. Pages then put the Dodgers up 2-1 when he hit his first homer of the game.
San Diego tied it in the third against Lou Trivino with a double from Martin Maldonado, a hit by pitch of Fernando Tatis Jr. and single from Arraez. Sheets then hit a sacrifice fly to put them up 3-2.
But the Dodgers came back in the fourth when Pages blasted his second homer to tie it up once again. That score then remained until a huge sixth inning that broke the game open for the Dodgers.
After a single from Freddie Freeman, Smith homered to put the Dodgers up 5-3. Teoscar Hernández and Muncy followed with singles before Pages roped an RBI-single. Tommy Edman truly broke the game open with a two-run double that put the Dodgers up 8-3.
Pages finished the game 4-for-4, continuing his All-Star caliber season.
But the Padres continued to battle as Trenton Brooks hit a two-run homer against Matt Sauer in the seventh. After Michael Kopech entered, the Padres scored another on a balk before he was able to get out of the inning.
Anthony Banda worked a scoreless eighth, although he walked a tightrope as the Padres had the bases loaded after an intentional walk to Tatis. Tanner Scott recorded the save with a scoreless ninth.
Dave Roberts ejected in Dodgers’ win
With Pages being hit by a pitch in the series opener and some tempers flaring, that boiled over into this game. The Padres must have felt the Dodgers got some revenge when they hit Tatis, and they ended up hitting Ohtani with a pitch in the third inning.
The umpires issued warnings to both sides, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went onto the field to discuss it. But after taking just two steps out of the dugout, umpire Tripp Gibson ejected Roberts.
That led to Roberts getting furious with the umpire, who has history with the Dodgers after also calling Muncy for obstruction earlier in the season on a highly questionable ruling.
Roberts got his money’s worth with the ejection, getting a lot of angry words in to the umpire crew before walking off the field.
It was the first time Roberts has been ejected this season and the 18th time of his career.
