The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to enjoy a successful stretch against National League West opponents by defeating the San Francisco Giants, 5-4, in the rubber match at Dodger Stadium.
Dustin May had his share of struggles and faced through plenty of traffic throughout his start on Father’s Day, but managed to do just enough. May allowed three runs while getting through six innings to make a quality start. He walked four batters and hit two.
May aided his cause by twice stranding the bases loaded to keep the game manageable. Sunday was May’s sixth time in 13 starts this season that he pitched at least six innings.
The Dodgers initially staked him a 2-0 lead behind Andy Pages’ sacrifice fly in the first inning and Tommy Edman’s home run in the second.
After the Giants took a 3-2 lead on Jung Hoo Lee’s two-run triple in the fourth, the Dodgers responded the next inning. Their comeback effort started with back-to-back singles by Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts.
Two outs followed, but Pages put the Dodgers in front for good with a three-run homer. The home run was Pages’ 13th of the season, which equals his total from last year.
Alex Vesia, Kirby Yates and Tanner Scott each pitched one inning to finish out the Dodgers’ win that moved them two games ahead of the Giants for first place in the NL West.
Yates surrendered a solo homer that allowed the Giants to pull within a run. It came one pitch after Yates appeared to have strike three on Daniel Johnson. That led to Yates and home plate umpire CB Bucknor exchanging words as Johnson rounded the bases, and again once the inning came to an end.
Giants big trade before Dodgers game
Moments before first pitch, the Giants completed a blockbuster trade to acquire Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox.
The Giants traded Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello and James Tibbs III to the Red Sox in the deal. Harrison being involved made for a particularly strange moment as he was due to start against the Dodgers.
Sean Hjelle instead filled the role of opener and pitched 3.2 innings.
