Preview: Chase Utley Returns To Philadelphia As Dodgers Continue Road Trip Against Phillies
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Fresh off a series victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their road trip with a stop at Citizens Bank Park for the start of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ross Stripling makes his 15th start of the season and looks to build off an excellent outing against the San Diego Padres on July 12. He tossed six scoreless innings, tallying five strikeouts compared to only one walk and earned his eighth win of the season.

Stripling enters with an 8-2 record on the year, having compiled a 2.08 ERA, 2.73 FIP and 1.08 WHIP in 95.1 innings pitched. He last faced the Phillies on May 30 at Dodger Stadium, when he allowed only one run over seven frames with nine strikeouts.

Philadelphia counters with Zach Eflin, who was activated off the 10-day disabled list prior to first pitch. The 23-year-old is in the midst of a breakout season, having posted a 3.15 ERA, 3.04 FIP and 1.08 WHIP across 68.2 innings pitched (12 starts).

Eflin has encountered the Dodgers on three previous occasions, where he has pitched to a 9.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 14 innings pitched. He endured a rough outing against Los Angeles on May 30, yielding seven hits and five runs in only four frames of work.

He was a Dodger for about one day during the 2014-15 offseason when he came over from the San Diego Padres along with Yasmani Grandal in the Matt Kemp trade, although he was quickly shipped off the Philadelphia for Jimmy Rollins.

Chase Utley returns to Citizens Bank Park for the final time as an active player after announcing his intentions to retire at the conclusion of the season.

The 39-year-old owns a .208/.255/.458 slash line against his former team with one double, one triple and three home runs in 51 plate appearances (15 games).

Utley has enjoyed hitting at Citizens Bank Park over the years, accumulating a lifetime .879 on-base plus slugging with 129 of his 259 career home runs in 763 games.

With Justin Turner heading to the disabled list, Alex Verdugo was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City although he is not in Monday’s lineup for the Dodgers.

Manny Machado starts at third base for the Dodgers with Turner out, and Chris Taylor returns to his familiar shortstop position. Machado has not played third base at all this season, but won two Gold Gloves at that position in his time with the Baltimore Orioles so it is not an unfamiliar position to him.
