Pirates Vs. Dodgers Game Preview: Fourth Of July At Dodger Stadium

After earning a 5-2 win in Monday’s opener, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a Fourth of July matchup at Dodger Stadium.

Emmet Sheehan makes his fourth career start and looks to build on a solid outing against the Colorado Rockies. He allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

It was the 23-year-old’s first experience at Coors Field, which is a notoriously difficult ballpark to pitch in. He was generally pleased with his performance despite the unique challenges and weather delay.

Over his first three starts with the Dodgers, Sheehan owns a 2.65 ERA, 4.12 FIP and 0.82 WHIP with 12 strikeouts against four walks in 17 innings pitched.

The right-hander began his career with 8.1 no-hit innings and became the only pitcher in the Modern Era (since 1900) to allow no more than three hits and pitch at least 12 frames through his first two starts.

The Pirates counter with Luis L. Ortiz, who hopes to bounce back from a rough outing against the San Diego Padres. He gave up four runs and six hits in just 4.2 innings pitched and walked three batters without recording a strikeout.

Ortiz enters at 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA, 5.68 FIP and 1.65 WHIP in 50.1 innings pitched this season (10 games, nine starts). He is making his first career appearance against the Dodgers.

Although it is not Friday, there will be postgame fireworks at Dodger Stadium in recognition of Independence Day.
