Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Alec Bohm committed to participating in the 2024 Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field on Monday, July 15.
Bohm and Baltimore Orioles All-Star Gunnar Henderson are the only players who have been named to the Derby thus far. Bohm and Henderson additionally were both voted All-Star Game starters.
It’s a first career selection for Henderson and Bohm, and both are making their respective Home Run Derby debut as well.
Bohm is the sixth different Phillies player (eighth overall participant) to take part in the event. He joins Jim Thome (2004), Bobby Abreu (2005), Ryan Howard (2006-2007, 2009), Chase Utley (2008), Rhys Hoskins (2018) and Kyle Schwarber (2022) as Phillies to participate in the Home Run Derby.
Abreu and Howard (2006) are the only Phillies who ever have won the competition.
Bohm has only hit 11 home runs so far this season but leads the National League with 100 RBI. Four of Bohm’s 11 homers have traveled at least 415 feet, and nine have had an exit velocity of 101.9 mph or better.
Bohm’s career high in home runs is 20, set during the 2023 season. Bohm has one home run in 20 plate appearances over five career games at Globe Life Field.
He has some experience in a Home Run Derby, winning the event in 2016 while playing in the Coastal Plain League event.
Who has said no to Home Run Derby?
Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Shohei Ohtani expressed interest in a second career Home Run Derby but ultimately decided to skip it due to his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery.
New York Yankees teammates Juan Soto and Aaron Judge also are not participating this year. Judge won the event in 2017, and Soto in 2022 at Dodger Stadium.
New Derby rules
Bohm and Henderson are going to be part of the group that is first to experience new Home Run Derby rules and format. Gone are head-to-head matchups and bracket seeding for the first round, and a pitch limit has been implemented, among other changes.
