Philadelphia Phillies Sign Trea Turner To $300 Million Contract

The Philadelphia Phillies announced the signing of Trea Turner to an 11-year contract at the conclusion of the 2022 MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was previously reported he will receive $300 million with a full no-trade clause.

Turner is coming off an All-Star campaign with the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he hit .298/.343/.466 with 39 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs and 100 RBI and 27 stolen bases across 160 games.

The Dodgers had interest in bringing back Turner, but reportedly weren’t keen on signing him to a long-term contract. There was also an overwhelming belief the Florida native wanted to return to the East Coast.

Turner joining the Phillies reunites him with Bryce Harper, who previously were teammates on the Washington Nationals from 2015-18. Harper was excited for Turner’s free agency and is believed to have played a role in recruiting him to the Phillies.

Turner’s departure creates a void at shortstop for the Dodgers, but they nonetheless will receive a compensation pick in the 2023 MLB Draft due to him rejecting the $19.65 million qualifying offer.

Turner was the first of the big free-agent shortstops to come off the board, and he has since been joined by Xander Bogaerts, who reportedly agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres on an 11-year, $280 million contract.

The Dodgers could still sign Carlos Correa or Dansby Swanson to replace Turner, but that isn’t considered likely. L.A. could sign a lesser shortstop, shift their focus to the trade market or address the position internally.

Andrew Friedman believes Gavin Lux can replace Trea Turner as Dodgers starting shortstop

If the Dodgers stay in-house to replace Turner at shortstop, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman believes Gavin Lux is a good candidate.

That’s a sentiment manager Dave Roberts echoed, although he noted there is still ample time in the offseason for plans to change.
