Walker Buehler quickly became one of the most beloved members of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, and that was before he clinched the 2024 World Series by closing out Game 5 against the New York Yankees.
Buehler is now on his third team in two seasons since that memorable October moment, having earned a spot on the San Diego Padres’ roster. That has Buehler on the other side of what’s become somewhat of a budding rivalry over recent years.
The nine-year veteran told Michael Duarte of the California Post that he hopes the reception won’t be too hostile for his first visit to Dodger Stadium as a member of the Padres.
“I guess we’ll have to see,” he said of the reception he thinks he’ll get now that he’s with the hated Padres. “Hopefully all in all it’s neutral.”
The Dodgers aren’t due to host the Padres until early July, but their first head-to-head series starts May 16 at Petco Park.
Buehler signed a one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox last season but was released after struggling. He signed a Minor League deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, though was not on their NL Division Series roster for the series against the Dodgers.
The right-hander signed another Minor League contract with the Padres ahead of Spring Training this year and made the Opening Day roster in the rotation.
Buehler completed his first start of the new season against the San Francisco Giants, allowing three runs in four innings of work.
The only start Buehler made against the Dodgers last season came when he was a member of the Red Sox. He allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings of work, taking a no-decision in a 4-3 victory for Boston.

If last season was any indication, Buehler should have little to worry about when he finally does make his return to the place he called home for seven seasons.
Not only did the Dodgers welcome him back with a video tribute, but Buehler also received a warm welcome from the L.A. faithful.
While it could be different this season now that he is with the Padres, it’s more likely that the crowd’s animosity will be levied at the other players. Perhaps the worst-case scenario for Buehler would be a mixture of boos and cheers.
