Padres Hit 4 Home Runs Off Alex Wood, Dodgers Bullpen

Chris Taylor and Justin Turner each hit a home run but Alex Wood struggled and the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen failed to keep the game tied in a 7-5 loss to the San Diego Padres. It snapped a three-game winning streak and prevented the Dodgers from gaining a full game on the first-place Colorado Rockies in the National League West standings.

Just like in the series opener, the Dodgers were first to score, this time on Taylor’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Turner’s solo shot to lead off the fourth, his first home run of the season, tied the game and sparked a three-run inning.

Yasmani Grandal and Matt Kemp combined for back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners. Logan Forsythe’s one-out RBI base hit gave the Dodgers a lead, and though Jose Pirela managed to make a terrific stop to rob Joc Pederson of a hit, a run still scored on the play.

Padres starter Jordan Lyles lost control in the fifth inning after allowing a single to Max Muncy. Lyles walked Turner, Grandal and Cody Bellinger, bringing in a run and marking the end of his night.

Although Matt Kemp has tormented his former team, he uncharacteristically failed to deliver with a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning, striking out swinging.

Wood retired the first four batters faced before walking Franmil Reyes in the second inning. Freddy Galvis hit Wood’s next pitch into the left-field pavilion for a go-ahead home run. Wood then surrendered a second home run of the night when A.J. Ellis took him deep in the fifth, and a third on Christian Villanueva’s game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning.

That marked the start of a big night for the Padres rookie, as he hit a solo home run off Josh Fields in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-5. Yasiel Puig represented the tying run at the plate when he pinch-hit with two outs in the eighth, but struck out looking. Brad Hand worked around a one-out walk in the ninth inning to earn the save.
