Jack Flaherty and the Los Angeles Dodgers were unable to contain the New York Mets in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers had a chance to end the seres as they entered with a 3-1 lead, but the 12-6 loss forces a Game 6 back at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.
Flaherty did not have his command or stuff from the get go, and it didn’t get better throughout his start. A single from Francisco Lindor to lead off the first and a walk from Brandon Nimmo set the stage for Pete Alonso, who crushed a three-run homer to put the Mets up 3-0.
The Mets continued to add on in the third inning when Starling Marte doubled in two more after a pair of walks to start the inning. They broke the game open, scoring three more runs in the inning on singles from Francisco Alvarez and Nimmo, along with a triple from Lindor to give them eight runs in the game.
Flaherty finished his day going three innings while giving up eight runs on eight hits with four walks and no strikeouts. The Dodgers handed him the ball looking to close out the series in New York, but he was unable to get the job done.
Brent Honeywell took over in the fourth and promptly hit Pete Alonso with a pitch before Jesse Winker tripled him home. Jeff McNeil hit a sacrifice fly that gave the Mets their 10th run.
Winker was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning by Honeywell and dame around to score on another sac fly from Jeff McNeil. Honeywell hit three batters in the game, setting a Dodgers postseason record.
Honeywell ended up going 4.2 innings before Anthony Banda recorded the final out.
