Nike is releasing a limited-edition Jackie Robinson Air Force 1 ’07 on Saturday, April 15. The date coincides with the anniversary of Robinson breaking the MLB color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
That came a mere five days after then-Dodgers president Branch Rickey issued a statement to announce the signing of Robinson. Now, all uniformed personnel across MLB wear Robinson’s retired No. 42 every April 15.
Starting during the 2022 season, players and coaches donned No. 42 in Dodger Blue, regardless of their team’s primary color, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Robinson’s debut. That practice is remaining in place this year as well.
Meanwhile, Nike is doing their part to celebrate the Dodgers icon with a third Robinson-inspired sneaker release in as many years. In 2021, a Jackie Robinson Day version of the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 was made available for purchase, and last year he was honored with a commemorative colorway of the Dunk Low that released on the day of the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.
This season’s Air Force 1 features Robinson’s No. 42 in red on the side of both shoes, along with baseball stitching down both heels. The white upper is accented with a blue tongue that includes the Brooklyn Dodgers logo, blue Swoosh and “CHANGE THE WORLD” is printed in text throughout the shoelaces.
The shoe also includes lace buckles that commemorate the year Robinson broke the color barrier (1947) and when he retired (1956). Robinson famously decided to retire rather than continue playing after being traded to the New York Giants.
