Dalton Rushing is once again under scrutiny for potentially saying something disparaging, this time to Miguel Amaya in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 12-4 win over the Chicago Cubs last week.
The incident occurred in the third inning after Amaya beat out a throw from Rushing while attempting to advance to second base on a wild pitch by Roki Sasaki. Television cameras then caught Rushing appearing to call Amaya a “fat [expletive],” with Nico Hoerner looking surprised in the batter’s box.
During an appearance on the “Spiegel & Holmes Show,” Hoerner expressed regret over not confronting Rushing and standing up for his teammate.
“I wish that I had confronted him a little more directly, to be honest. I was pretty taken aback and in the middle of my at-bat. It was just kind of a strange thing to experience,” Hoerner said. “Yeah, I felt a little weird about that.”
Hoerner added that doesn’t necessarily mean he would have looked to have a physical confrontation with Rushing, but noted, “At the end of the day you want to have your teammates’ backs.”
While nothing came of it, the remark has raised plenty of eyebrows considering previous on-field drama involving Rushing this month.
The 25-year-old first alleged something “fishy” with the Colorado Rockies’ success against Will Klein during a series at Coors Field, which was quickly refuted by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Then during a matchup against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, Rushing appeared to say an expletive toward Jung Hoo Lee as he sat at home plate upon being thrown out to end the sixth inning
Rushing later refuted the notion that he used the word that many lip readers claimed, but the Giants seemingly retaliated when Logan Webb hit the young backstop two days later.
“It probably was,” Roberts answered when asked if he believed Webb intentionally hit Rushing. “And for me, he said what he said. I don’t think he meant it too personally, but they see it, social media catches it. Webby is an old-school guy. He’s protecting his teammate, so I’ve got no problem with it.”
When will Dalton Rushing face Cubs again?
The Dodgers and Cubs aren’t scheduled to play again until Aug. 3-5, when they meet for three games at Wrigley Field. While that isn’t for another three months, it wouldn’t be surprising if Chicago looks to avenge Amaya during the series.
