The Los Angeles Dodgers Spring Training schedule comes to a close Tuesday night in Anaheim with the finale of the Freeway Series.
The matchup against the Los Angeles Angels also represents the first time Mookie Betts is playing since March 9. Betts has been battling an undisclosed stomach virus that prevented him from being able to eat solid food without vomiting until Monday.
“Really encouraged,” manager Dave Roberts said before the Dodgers suffered a walk-off loss to the Angels. “Went through a full day at Dodger Stadium, he hit, took grounders, threw, kept food down, which is great. My expectation is that he plays [Tuesday] and takes a few at-bats.”
In his first public comments since dealing with the mysterious illness, Betts on Sunday mentioned he was prescribed new medication that he hoped would help address the stomach irritation.

“I think he was alluding to getting to a common denominator on a diet situation,” Roberts answered when asked if the medication could explain Betts’ sudden improvement. “So I’ll let him speak to that more.”
Betts began to feel ill two days before the Dodgers left Arizona to play in Tokyo. He did not appear in any of the four games at the Tokyo Dome and returned to Los Angeles before his teammates in effort to accelerate his recovery process.
Betts was in the Dodgers lineup for the Freeway Series game at Dodger Stadium on Sunday but was scratched because of more vomiting.
Should Betts get through Tuesday’s game without issue, Roberts suggested the expectation would be he plays in the Dodger Stadium opener as well rather than being placed on the 10-day injured list as the Dodgers resume their regular season.
