The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in part behind another encouraging offensive performance from Mookie Betts.
The 33-year-old homered for the second time in as many games, his first time doing so since hitting three in a row from June 23-26. It also came on the heels of Betts’ three-hit performance in the Dodgers’ 5-4 walk-off win over the Royals on Tuesday.
Betts is now 11-for-26 (.423) with four extra-base hits and three RBI over his last seven games dating back to Aug. 5.
“Uh, I don’t know,” Betts said after Tuesday’s game when asked if there is something he can point to for his recent success. “Just know a good day at the plate. We seem to have this story over and over again, so we’ll see tomorrow if we can string something together. But I’m happy to help the boys pull out a W.”
Betts was quite animated while rounding the bases after his first home run against the Royals on Tuesday. It was his first long ball since hitting two against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 20.
Betts said his emotions stemmed from feeling a sense of relief amid his season-long struggles and overall excitement with helping the Dodgers win a game.
“It was a little bit of both,” Betts began. “I mean, I haven’t hit a ball in the air hard in a long time, and so I was happy about that. And then, obviously, just to get us going, we know how things have been here recently, so just to get us on top, meant something.”
Mookie Betts feeling ‘more normal’ at plate
It hasn’t been an easy season for Betts, but he admitted to feeling some normalcy after finding success against the Royals.
“I mean, feel a little more normal,” Betts said Wednesday night. “I feel like I can get some good swings off now. Felt like the pitch selection has been pretty good. Again, every time I’ve said it, it hasn’t been great after. But these three games have definitely been definitely confidence building.”
After a productive series against the Royals, Betts is now hitting .239/.297/.417 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs and 39 RBI in 84 games this season.
