Mookie Betts was expected to start at second base for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, but the team moved him over to shortstop as a result of Gavin Lux having issues throwing to first base.
Betts has limited experience as a shortstop, but he did play there 16 times during the 2023 season in what was his only MLB experience at the position. The seven-time All-Star also played 13 games at shortstop when he was a 19-year-old in Single-A during the 2012 season.
While the position change came at a not so ideal time, Betts believes he is beginning to settle in at shortstop. “I’m a lot more confident, but it’s going to take experience to really grow the confidence,” he said.
“But going out there and taking the field, I feel I can make every play. I think that’s a really important mindset for me to have going forward.”
Betts has been spending extra time at shortstop to prepare for the regular season and accelerate the learning curve.
“It’s something I’ve never learned, but I enjoy learning. I enjoy learning and seeing the process, so we’ll see how it goes during the season,” he said.
Betts, who has never backed down from a challenge, is confident he can become a quality shortstop. “I think the most important thing I’ve learned is I can do it. I can do it. I really believe I can do it,” Betts said.
“I trust I can do it and the coaches believe in me. We’re putting in all the work. Just that positive mindset will take me a long way.”
Mookie Betts embracing ‘pressure’ of being Dodgers starting shortstop
Betts said he will not put more pressure on himself at shortstop and instead is viewing the position change as a fun challenge.
He nevertheless recognizes the expectations that come with starting at shortstop for the Dodgers, and is embracing those.
