The Los Angeles Dodgers have completed more than half of their six-game road trip and they have already lost via a walk-off in three of those.
The Dodgers’ first two walk-off losses came on consecutive days against the Cincinnati Reds before they snapped a four-game losing streak the following day to avoid a series sweep. Their third walk-off loss came Friday at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies.
L.A. was shut down for most of the night by Ranger Suárez, who pitched six innings while giving up just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Suárez put himself in a solid position to win, leaving with a 4-1 lead in the seventh.
Offensively, the Dodgers have not been at the top of their game recently, but Mookie Betts gave credit to Suárez for pitching well, via SportsNet LA:
“He pitched good. He gave up one, he moved the ball around. Even though we got into some deep counts with him, he was able to finish us off. He pitched a good game. Got to tip our cap to him.”
The Dodgers rallied in the seventh with back-to-back homers from Betts and Freeman to tie the game against Matt Strahm, but they were unable to take the lead with their remaining two innings. That led to Schwarber hitting a walk-off solo shot off Caleb Ferguson in the bottom of the ninth inning.
L.A. still has two more games on their current road trip, which are both against the Phillies, so Betts believes they need to just turn the page following the three walk-off losses:
“We just do. There’s another game tomorrow. There’s no sense in worrying about it. Just one of those weird times. It could be the flip side in the next four games. Just got to take it on the chin and keep moving.”
Overall, the Dodgers have been in a rough patch, going 4-6 over their last 10 games, including losses in four of their last five. They still have a strong record of 36-28 and hold the top Wild Card spot in the National League.
However, the Dodgers have fallen to 2.5 games behind the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, a club that has won eight of 10.
Julio Urías not returning to Dodgers rotation Sunday
The Dodgers planned for Julio Urías to return against the Phillies on Sunday, but that is no longer the case as his hamstring injury is still lingering. The team now plans to utilize a bullpen game to finish off their road trip.
