The Los Angeles Dodgers were represented by Mookie Betts on the list of MLB Top-10 Shortstops Right Now heading into the 2025 season.
The eight-time All-Star was ranked as the fifth-best shortstop for this year by The Shredder. It is the first time Betts has made the list as a shortstop, but he was previously included in the rankings for right field and second base.
Betts also placed among the top 10 shortstops in lists compiled by MLB Network host Brian Kenny (No. 3), analyst Mark DeRosa (No. 5) and reporter Joe Posnanski (No. 6).
The Shredder ranked Baltimore Orioles All-Star Gunnar Henderson as the best shortstop in baseball for the 2025 season.
Betts batted .289/.372/.491 with 24 doubles, five triples, 19 home runs and 75 RBI in 116 games last season en route to winning a Silver Slugger Award. He went on to hit .290/.387/.565 with nine extra-base hits and 16 RBI in 16 postseason games to help the Dodgers win their eighth World Series title in franchise history.
Betts leads all shortstops in on-base percentage, slugging, wRC+ and WAR over the last three seasons (minimum 800 plate appearances). He is tied with Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals with 18.2 fWAR since 2022, which trails only the New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor (19.6) during that span.
Betts opened the 2024 season as the Dodgers’ starting shortstop after Gavin Lux struggled at the position in Spring Training and was moved to second base.
Betts ended up appearing in 65 games (61 starts) at shortstop, but shifted back to right field after missing nearly two months due to a left hand fracture.
Betts showed that he was more than capable of handling shortstop after primarily playing the outfield in the first 10 seasons of his career. Nevertheless, Betts admitted that learning shortstop on the fly was one of the most difficult tasks he has ever faced.
The Dodgers are confident Betts will be in a better position to play shortstop this year after having a full offseason to prepare.
