The Los Angeles Dodgers did not have a player ranked by The Shredder on the list of MLB Top-10 Second Basemen Right Now heading into the 2025 season.
Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Ketel Marte topped the rankings and also placed No. 1 on lists compiled by analysts Brian Kenny, Mark DeRosa and Sam Miller.
Marte is coming off one of the best seasons of his career as he batted .292/.372/.560 with 23 doubles, two triples, 36 home runs and 95 RBI in 136 games.
The 31-year-old won his first Silver Slugger Award at the position and finished third in National League MVP voting, behind only Shohei Ohtani and Francisco Lindor.
Mookie Betts ranked first on The Shredder’s list of MLB Top-10 Second Basemen Right Now in 2024, but was not included this year as he is returning to shortstop.
Betts opened the 2024 season as the Dodgers’ starting shortstop after Gavin Lux struggled at the position in Spring Training and was moved to second base.
He ended up appearing in 65 games at shortstop (61 starts), but shifted back to right field after missing nearly two months due to a left hand fracture.
Betts showed that he was more than capable of handling shortstop after primarily playing the outfield in the first 10 seasons of his career. Nevertheless, Betts admitted that learning shortstop on the fly was one of the most difficult tasks he has faced.
The Dodgers are confident Betts will be in a better position to play shortstop this year after having a full offseason to prepare.
Although he is currently projected to start at shortstop, Betts’ long-term outlook may be at second base. He has appeared in 118 games at the position over seven seasons, including 18 last year.
For the time being, Hyeseong Kim appears primed to take on the bulk of opportunities at second base in the wake of the Dodgers trading Lux.
