MLB Rumors: Marlins ‘Open For Business’ Ahead Of Trade Deadline

The Miami Marlins kicked off the trade season last month by sending two-time batting champion Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres in exchange for four prospects.

The trade seemingly came out of nowhere, as it isn’t common for All-Star players to be dealt so early in the year. However, the Marlins had jumped out to a historically bad start and hold the worst record in the National League.

The Marlins are expected to continue selling ahead of the July 30 trade deadline, with Tanner Scott and a few of their starting pitchers drawing interest, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

Teams, viewing the Arraez move as a signal the Marlins were open for business, began inquiring on the team’s starting pitchers as well as reliever Tanner Scott, according to club sources.

Scott has been one of the best relievers in baseball over the past two seasons as his 2.9 WAR ranks second to only the Cleveland Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase (3.0). The left-hander will almost certainly be traded as he is due to become a free agent after the 2024 season.

The Marlins could also entertain offers for Jesús Luzardo and Braxton Garrett, who have been two of the team’s better starting pitchers in recent years. Both left-handers’ names came up in trade speculation during the offseason.

Luzardo is 2-4 with a 4.18 ERA, 3.64 FIP and 1.14 WHIP in nine starts this season. He is under team control through the 2026 season, so his asking price figures to be high.

Braxton is controllable for even longer as he won’t reach free agency until after the 2028 season. He is 2-0 with a 4.56 ERA, 3.35 FIP and 1.06 WHIP in four starts this year.

Will Dodgers match up with Marlins on trade?

With the Dodgers expected to be buyers at the trade deadline, a recent report suggested they are looking for offensive help to bolster the bottom of their lineup.

The Marlins have a few veteran offensive players they could look to move with Bryan De La Cruz looking like the potnetial best option from their mix. They could also be in play for Scott if they wish to improve their bullpen.
