The Los Angeles Dodgers announced a slew of changes to their front office this week, and among them was Brandon Gomes being promoted to general manager.

It was a role that had gone unfilled since Farhan Zaidi left the organization to head the San Francisco Giants’ baseball operations in November 2018. The possibility of Gomes being named Dodgers general manager was first mentioned at the start of the offseason when he garnered interest from other clubs in search of lead executives for their respective front offices.

The New York Mets reportedly interviewed Gomes for their general manager vacancy but didn’t get the impression he was interested in leaving L.A. The organization went on to hire Billy Eppler for the position.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Dodgers did not grant the Mets permission to interview Gomes for their GM opening:

Gomes first joined the Dodgers in November 2016 as pitching coordinator of performance, and his focus was on assisting Minor League pitchers. He was promoted to director of player development in December 2017, filling a void that was created when the Philadelphia Phillies hired Gabe Kapler as manager.

Gomes then was elevated to vice president and assistant general manager in March 2019. Over recent years he formed a triumvirate with senior vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes and director of baseball development and scouting to handle GM duties in the time after Zaidi left.

Gomes: Promotion to Dodgers GM ‘incredibly fulfilling’

Gomes revealed that becoming Dodgers general manager was one of his biggest goals since retiring as a player and believes it will be a rewarding experience.
