MLB Rumors: Cardinals Meeting With Giancarlo Stanton To Discuss Potential Trade
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

As the Miami Marlins continue to explore trade scenarios involving Giancarlo Stanton, the San Francisco Giants appear to be the most aggressive suitors. That might be to the dismay of Stanton, who grew up rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

While the Dodgers have often been speculated as a potential landing spot, even prior to Stanton signing his record 13-year contract, his hometown team are said to be taking a lax approach to the situation. It’s with good reason, of course, as the Dodgers don’t have a dire need for Stanton.

The early field of teams with reported interest in the 2017 National League MVP included the St. Louis Cardinals. Shortly thereafter, it was indicated Stanton would not waive his no-trade clause for either the Cardinals or Boston Red Sox.

Whether he’s had a change of hear or is simply doing due diligence, Stanton and the Cardinals reportedly are meeting to discuss a potential trade. But that’s not necessarily an indication of a deal being imminent, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network:

One day removed from the Giants speaking in person with Stanton’s representatives, the Marlins were said to have focused in on four of their prospects for a potential trade package. It’s presumed the Giants would take on the bulk of Stanton’s $295 million remaining salary over the next 10 seasons.

The 28-year-old is coming off a career season in which he hit .281/.376/.631 with 32 doubles, 59 home runs, 132 RBI and a 165 OPS+. Stanton’s MVP Award was the first ever won by a Marlins player.

Although he wields tremendous power with a full no-trade clause, the Marlins reportedly warned Stanton they would move to trade other assets from the roster if he deliberately refused to approve a deal.
