Major League Baseball and the Players Association jointly announced the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) testing results under the league’s COVID-19 Health Monitoring and Testing Plan, and the results included testing through the end of Thursday, Aug. 27.
Among the results they announced from the 12,276 monitoring samples collected and tested in the past week were two positives, which is 0.02% of all tests. There were zero positives among players and two among staff members.
The two staff member positives were from a single MLB team as the other 29 MLB teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, had zero positives.
The total number of monitoring samples collected and tested this season has been 90,888. Of those samples, there have been 84 new positives, which is 0.09%. Of those new positives, 54 have been players and 30 have been staff members.
While the 2020 season got off to a rough start with both the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals have organizational-wide outbreaks, it seems the league has strengthened its protocols in recent weeks and the season has actually been a success.
Two teams, the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets, have had singular positive tests in recent weeks, but no one else in either organization tested positive. After the original outbreaks, teams began taking the protocols more seriously, wearing masks and not shaking hands or spitting, which has helped avoid those larger outbreaks.
Since players and staff members reported to Summer Camp, the Dodgers have not had a single positive test. Their leadership, both players and staff members, have worked hard to enforce the league’s protocols and the players have taken it seriously to this point.
MLB likely to use bubble for 2020 postseason
While MLB hasn’t, many other American sports have used bubbles for their respective seasons this year, and it has worked to perfection to this point as there has not been a single positive test in the NBA, NHL, WNBA or MLS.
It appears MLB is on the verge of having a bubble of their own for the postseason, with Southern California and Texas as the two placers likely to host.
Under the latest proposal, the National League playoffs would be in Texas at Globe Life Field and Minute Maid Park, so that is where the Dodgers’ journey to the 2020 World Series would potentially take place.
