Miguel Rojas: ‘Pretty Special’ To Walk Across Roberto Clemente Bridge With Son

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of a six-game road trip that began on Tuesday with a 12-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

It’s a family trip for the Dodgers, so many players have taken the time to explore the area with their loved ones in between games. For Miguel Rojas, that entailed getting to walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge with his son, Aaron.

“It’s pretty special, especially because this is my favorite ballpark to play on the road,” Rojas said on SportsNet LA. “I think it’s beautiful, I think there’s a lot of history in this town, especially with Roberto Clemente being one of the our pioneers in baseball.

“Having an opportunity to reflect on what he did for all of us Latin American players, for us to have an opportunity to play, and then carry that into my son and show my family why this place is special to me and all Latin players. I think it’s pretty cool to walk over the bridge. That’s something I wanted to to do. It’s off the checklist now.”

PNC Park is considered one of the most scenic baseball stadiums, offering views of the Downtown Pittsburgh Skyline, Allegheny River and aforementioned Roberto Clemente Bridge.

The bridge becomes a pedestrian walkway to PNC Park on game days, giving fans a unique way to travel to the ballpark. Aside from the cool architecture, it is also named after one of baseball’s most legendary figures.

Roberto Clemente’s MLB career

Clemente won two World Series, was a 15-time All-Star, MVP winner and the recipient of 12 Gold Glove Awards in his 18 seasons with the Pirates. For all of his accomplishments on the field, he is regarded as one of the most giving figures in baseball history.

Clemente’s Hall of Fame career was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash while delivering emergency aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Sept. 15th marks the annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy as a humanitarian and to formally acknowledge all 30 nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award.

The Roberto Clemente Award was established in his honor to give to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.
