The Los Angeles Dodgers have seemingly hit rock bottom, and it’s not the first time this season it’s felt like that. On Thursday, the Dodgers were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates and they just nearly avoided being shut out for the second straight game.
The club has been playing poor baseball for quite a while now, and they have gone just 25-30 since the start of July. That has also taken them from a nine-game lead in the National League West on July 3, to now fighting for the division title.
The Dodgers are 1-5 in their last six games, and it’s led to frustrations all around. Manager Dave Roberts has called out the club numerous times, but nothing has worked to this point.
Miguel Rojas, who is one of the leaders in the Dodgers clubhouse, also added that the team has been both embarrassed and frustrated for a while, via SportsNet LA:
“We’ve been playing poorly for over two months. We all know that. It’s frustrating, it’s embarrassing. I feel like as a team we know what we’re capable of.”
The Dodgers have just 21 games remaining, so time is running out to fix their issues, if it’s possible. The team still has the talent necessary to win, but Roberts has attributed their struggles to larger issues, such as a lack of focus.
Roberts has also implied some players on the team are relying on eventually flipping a switch to turn things around and get more locked in.
However, the Dodgers have not been able to do that and they are now lined up to play in a Wild Card Series as they enter the final stretch of the season.
Things need to turn around for the Dodgers soon, but every loss and poor performance makes that seem more unlikely to happen.
Miguel Rojas confident in Dodgers
While the Dodgers have failed to play up to their capabilities this season, the talent on the roster is undeniable, and Rojas believes they’ll be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.
“I know the record is not there for us, but we’re still in first place,” he said. “Not playing the best baseball we can play, we’re still in first place and I think we’re going to be pretty dangerous in the playoffs.”
