Prior to their series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Michael Busch from Triple-A Oklahoma City as the corresponding move to Max Muncy going on the paternity list.
Busch started at designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and key walk in his MLB debut.
Because Busch was playing in his first big league game, the 25-year-old wore a special debut patch on his jersey as part of a partnership between MLB, the Players Association (MLBPA), Fanatics Collectibles and Topps.
All players who make their MLB debut during the 2023 season will have the commemorative jersey patch. After appearing in their first game, the patch is removed, secured and authenticated under the auspices of the MLB Authentication Program for inclusion in an upcoming Topps product.
“Debut Patches represent one of the first steps that Fanatics Collectibles is taking to bring the players and leagues closer to the products, and ultimately fans,” Fanatics Collectibles CEO Mike Mahan said in a statement.
“As a trusted partner of the league and players association, we are honored to partner closely with MLB and MLB Players Inc., to create this innovative, first-of-its kind program, and are committed to continue developing unique experiences for all fans and collectors.”
The collaboration between MLB, MLBPA, Fanatics Collectibles and Topps was announced this past March, and is the first with a specific focus for inclusion on trading cards.
“For a Player there is no bigger moment than the first time they step onto a field for their Major League debut,” MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark said.
“The Debut Patch is one way to capture the timeless nature of this moment and provide fans the opportunity to be part of it by collecting a Player worn item.”
Michael Busch enjoyed Dodgers debut
Before being called up to the Dodgers, Busch hit a stellar .337/.461/.506 with eight doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI in 21 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City games this year.
While an impressive showing, Busch thoroughly has enjoyed the opportunity to join the Dodgers this week. He had a group of more than 30 supporters in attendance on Tuesday, and some family and friends still in town for the second game of the series at PNC Park.
