Max Muncy Explains Reason For Taking Discounts To Stay With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Max Muncy to a one-year contract extension that will keep him under team control through at least the 2027 season. The deal includes a $10 million club option for 2028 and a $3 million buyout.

The Dodgers had already picked up Muncy’s team option worth $10 million for 2026, paving the way for him to play a ninth season with the team.

Muncy became the Dodgers’ longest-tenured player when Clayton Kershaw during the offseason. Muncy has been with the organization since 2017, when he signed a Minor League contract after being released by the Oakland Athletics.

Muncy has signed several team-friendly contract extensions along the way and explained that he doesn’t mind taking less money because he enjoys being part of the Dodgers, via Rowan Kavner of Fox Sports:

“Part of me and who I am as a person and how I was raised, I like to be loyal to people. This organization took a chance on me when I was out of baseball, basically. That meant a lot to me. They stuck with me when things were going bad. They’ve never wavered on me at all. That means a lot to me in itself, and it’s just a place I’m very comfortable. My family’s comfortable here. We have a chance to win every single year. That’s why I play this game. I want to win. Obviously, you make money in this game, but that’s not why I play. I play because I want to win. It’s the competitive fire that I want to go out and win as much as I can. That to me is worth more than money. I know I’m leaving money on the table, but I’m more than OK with that because I wouldn’t be OK with myself trying to chase money somewhere else, watching this team win and I’m on the sidelines. That’s just not who I am. I would rather win. Another component to it is just the relationship I’ve built here. Like I was just saying, I like to be loyal and my relationships mean a lot. I’ve created such a relationship with the staff, the front office, the coaches, the medical and training staff, the clubhouse guys. I just don’t want to create that somewhere else. Being here for my entire career at this point would mean the world to me, and this gives me the chance to do that.”

Muncy has been a big part of the Dodgers’ success in recent years and is coming off a strong season that saw him hit .243/.376/.470 with 19 home runs, 67 RBI, 48 runs scored and a 137 wRC+ over 100 games.

Muncy hit a key home run in Game 7 of the World Series to pull the Dodgers within one, setting up their dramatic comeback win against the Toronto Blue Jays. He finished the postseason with three homers.

His 16 round trippers in the postseason are a franchise record as well as his 46 runs scored and he is among the franchise leaders in various other categories, including RBI (3rd, 37), doubles (6th, 9), plate appearances (2nd, 328) and extra-base hits (T-3rd, 25).

Max Muncy’s Dodgers career

Muncy has appeared in 924 games with the Dodgers, hitting .232/.358/.485 with 209 home runs, 587 RBI, 566 runs scored and a 129 wRC+ while accumulating 23.3 WAR.

The two-time All-Star ranks seventh all-time in Dodger history in homers and is two behind Steve Garvey for sixth all-time in franchise history. In his eight seasons in Dodger Blue, he has collected 713 hits, 566 runs and an .828 OPS.
