Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson took a break from his duties as Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations to attend Clayton Kershaw’s annual Ping Pong 4 Purpose event at Dodger Stadium.
Johnson was the recipient of the Kershaw’s Challenge Impact Award for his charitable work throughout the community with the Magic Johnson Foundation. While walking the blue carpet Johnson alluded to his collection of championship rings — five as a player with the Lakers and one as owner of the Los Angeles Sparks.
Noticeably absent, Johnson said, was one with the Dodgers. Upon receiving the award at the beginning of the charity event, Johnson concluded his acceptance speech with a prediction.
“Last but not least, the Dodgers are going to win the World Series this year. This is our year,” he said to rousing applause.
“Get healthy,” Johnson told Kershaw. “Lead us. That’s the only ring I don’t have, and I need that ring.”
Johnson’s time spent around the Dodgers has decreased since he was named head of the Lakers front office in February. The Dodgers shortly thereafter confirmed the Hall-of-Fame point guard would remain involved with the franchise.
The Dodgers last won and reached the World Series in 1988. They were within two games last year before falling to the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series.
Los Angeles enters play Friday with the best record in the Majors at 71-31 and holding the best World Series odds.
