The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Tayler Scott to a Minor League contract and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Scott joins the Dodgers organization after electing free agency upon being designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies last month.
Scott had been with the Phillies since September, when they claimed the right-hander off waivers from the San Diego Padres. He never appeared in a game for the Phillies and was DFA’d as the corresponding move to the team signing Taijuan Walker.
Scott’s only experience at the Major League level in 2022 came with the Padres, as he made eight appearances. He struggled to the tune of an 0-1 record to go along with a 6.75 ERA, 3.53 FIP and 2.08 WHIP.
None of Scott’s eight relief appearances with the Padres came against the Dodgers but he did face the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies.
Prior to that, Scott made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners in 2019. That year also saw him pitch for the Baltimore Orioles. Scott finished with a combined 14.33 ERA and 2.57 WHIP across 14 games during the 2019 season.
The 30-year-old has fared much better throughout his Minor League career, as he’s a lifetime 42-37 with a 3.90 ERA across 285 games (66 starts).
While with the Triple-A affiliates of the Padres and Phillies last season, Scott went a combined 2-1 with a 4.53 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 30.4% strikeout rate and 6.4% walk rate in 37 games.
Scott becomes the latest in what’s been a string of Minor League signings by the Dodgers this offseason. Others with MLB experience who signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers include Adam Kolarek, Jason Heyward, Steven Duggar and David Freitas.
Tayler Scott part of rare group in MLB history
Gift Ngoepe and Scott are the only South African-born players in MLB history. Ngoepe made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017 and played in 13 games for the Toronto Blue Jays the following year.
The Chicago Cubs selected Scott in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
