The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Chuckie Robinson to a Minor League contract, per his player profile page on MLB.com. He returns after finishing the 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves organization.
Robinson first joined the Dodgers on May 31, when he was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Robinson was designated for assignment less than one week later but cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The 31-year-old then received an opportunity with the Dodgers in September due to Dalton Rushing going on the 10-day injured list with a right shin contusion. That came at a time when the team already was without Will Smith being available because of a bone bruise on his right hand.
Smith remained part of the active roster but was limited because of the injury that later was revealed to be a hairline fracture.
For Robinson, it represented a third opportunity at the Major League level. Robinson made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022, and also played in 26 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2024.
Robinson appeared in just one game for the Dodgers before getting optioned as a corresponding move to Max Muncy returning from the injured list. Robinson was recalled on Sept. 13 because Smith landed on the IL, though got optioned three days later in a corresponding move to the Dodgers activating Rushing.
That was followed by the Dodgers quietly putting Robinson on waivers for a second time, and he was subsequently claimed by the Braves and optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The Braves outrighted Robinson off their 40-man roster in early November, at which point he exercised the right to become a free agent.
Why did Dodgers re-sign Chuckie Robinson?
Given that Smith and Rushing are locked into their respective roles as the starting and backup catchers, the Dodgers don’t have an obvious need for Robinson.
However, by losing Ben Rortvedt to the Reds, the organization lacks catching depth with MLB experience. Robinson presumably will begin the 2026 season with the Oklahoma City Comets and only get called up if the Dodgers face an injury behind the plate.
