UPDATE (Monday, Sept. 12, 9:25 p.m. PT): The Los Angeles Dodgers officially clinched a spot in the 2022 MLB postseason with their win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series opener at Chase Field. Their magic number to win the National League West is down to one.

UPDATE (Monday, Sept. 12, 9:30 a.m. PT): An error from MLB indicated the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a 2022 postseason berth on Sunday, but they still need one more win or a Milwaukee Brewers loss.

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a spot in the 2022 MLB postseason, and next on the horizon is a ninth National League West title in the past 10 years. For the time being, the Dodgers are guaranteed to play October baseball for the 10th consecutive season.

The Dodgers’ march toward securing a spot in the playoffs has long been a matter of if, but the team again planned to take a modest approach to recognizing the achievement.

“I think we’ll just take it one day at a time,” answered Max Muncy last week when asked if the Dodgers would celebrate clinching a 2022 postseason berth.

“When we get there we’ll talk about it. We’re just taking one day at a time.”

With their first magic number down to one entering play Sunday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there would be an “acknowledgement” of reaching the MLB postseason once again.

“It’s not going to be a celebration,” Roberts added. “It’s something that I definitely feel should be acknowledged. It’s an accomplishment.”

The Dodgers took a similar approach last year, though at the time that largely was due to being in the midst of an NL West race that ultimately went in favor of the San Francisco Giants. Of course, the Dodgers got the last laugh by defeating the Giants in the NL Division Series.

Including this season, the Dodgers have won at least 90 games 27 times since moving to Los Angeles in 1958. Only the New York Yankees (32) have accomplished the feat more times during that span. The Yankees are five wins from a 33rd season of reaching the benchmark.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ streak of eight consecutive NL West titles trailed only the Atlanta Braves (14) and Yankees (nine) for longest such stretch since the divisional era began in 1969.

Roberts set a record by a Dodgers manager in guiding them to an NL West title in his first five seasons. In 2019, Roberts became the first manager in MLB history to lead his team to a division title in each of his first four full seasons.

Prior to that, Roberts joined Tommy Lasorda (1977) as the only rookie managers in Dodgers franchise history to oversee a team that won the division title.

This year’s club is on pace to break the Dodgers wins record of 106, shared by the 2019 and 2021 teams. The 1899 Brooklyn Superbas hold the franchise record for best winning percentage for a full season at .682 (101-47), followed by 1953 Dodgers finishing with .681 (105-49).

The 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Seattle Mariners share the all-time MLB wins record of 116.

The Dodgers are on track to begin their MLB postseason run by hosting Game 1 of the NLDS at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
