The Detroit Tigers jumped out to a lead in the first inning but the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to extend their winning streak to five games with a 39th comeback win this season. Corey Seager tied for a game high with three RBI and Chris Taylor led with four hits.
Adrian Gonzalez doubled in his first at-bat since coming off the 60-day disabled list and finished the night with 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Gonzalez’s double was one of six for the Dodgers on the night, which matched a season high.
With one out in the second inning and runners at second and third, Logan Forsythe’s RBI single cut Tigers’ lead to 2-1. Taylor hit a two-out double to tie the game, and Seager’s base hit drove in a pair to cap off the four-run rally.
Forsythe’s leadoff walk in the fourth was cashed in by Joc Pederson on an RBI double. Pederson’s double was just a second hit in his last 40 at-bats, and it extended the Dodgers’ lead to 5-3. Taylor found the same spot as Pederson did in center field for an RBI double of his own.
Ryan Zimmermman allowed a leadoff double to Forsythe and one-out single to Taylor prior to being removed with one out in the sixth inning. Daniel Stumpf allowed a sacrifice fly to Seager before getting through the inning and closing the book on Zimmermann.
The right-hander was charged with seven runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings. It was a second consecutive start in which he surrendered seven earned runs.
The Tigers did their damage on extra-base hits, no matter the pitcher. Hill surrendered back-to-back RBI doubles to Justin Upton and Miguel Cabrera in the first inning. Upton then hit a solo home run that popped out of Cody Bellinger’s glove and over the short fence in left field in the third.
Hill’s night came to an end after 84 pitches over five innings, three runs allowed on six hits, and five strikeouts against three walks.
Victor Martinez tagged Josh Fields for a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pedro Baez worked around some traffic to complete two scoreless innings, which included striking out Upton in the seventh.
Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth meant Kenley Jansen entered in a non-save situation in the bottom half of the inning. Jansen surrendered a home run to Upton, who finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, then allowed consecutive singles with one out.
He struck out Victor Martinez and James McCann to strand both runners and close out the game. With their 8-5, win the Dodgers improved to 15-3 in Interleague play.
