Friday was a remarkable night in Los Angeles and surrounding area as the Lakers, Dodgers and USC Trojans were among those playing a game.
Also being held was the 2024 East L.A. Classic between rivals Garfield High School and Roosevelt High. They battled at SoFi Stadium, while just down the block Kia Forum hosted Jeff Lynne’s ELO The Over and Out Tour for the first of back-to-back concert nights.
Furthermore, Cosm hosted a Dodgers World Series watch party for Game 1. Cosm Los Angeles is located between Intuit Dome and The Forum.
Much of the conversation heading into Friday centered around the expected traffic jams on Southern California freeways, unofficially deemed carmageddon.
That figured to be further magnified by Game 1 of the World Series having a 5:08 p.m. PT start time, putting it right in the peak of traditional rush hour traffic around Los Angeles.
The angst arguably was more than worth it as Freddie Freeman delivered a walk-off grand slam, the Lakers remained undefeated under new head coach JJ Redick, and the Trojans picked up a needed win against Rutgers.
Oct. 26: Los Angeles sports history
Friday was the first time the Dodgers, Lakers and Trojans all played on the same day.
Dodgers beat Yankees
The Dodgers overcame a deficit in the 10th inning thanks to Freeman making MLB postseason history with the first walk-off grand slam ever hit in the World Series.
Lakers comeback win vs. Suns
The Lakers struggled in the first quarter against the Phoenix Suns but received another big game from Anthony Davis en route to a 123-116 comeback win.
With that, the Lakers improved to 2-0 on the young season.
USC Trojans football ends losing streak
Having lost three games in a row in deflating fashion, the Trojans took control early against the Scarlet Knights and largely maintained in the driver’s seat for much of the night.
Rutgers did cut USC’s lead to 28-20 in the third quarter, but Miller Moss and the Trojans responded to pull away with 14 unanswered points.
That put USC back at .500 heading into their next matchup with the Washington Huskies.
