Yankees Fan Who Grabbed Mookie Betts Wants To Be Forgotten

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Game 4 of the World Series against the New York Yankees with the chance to compete the series sweep and take the Commissioner’s trophy back to Los Angeles.

However, the game got off to a weird start in the bottom of the first inning when two Yankees’ fans attempted to interfere with Dodgers’ outfielder Mookie Betts as he made a play in foul territory down the right-field line.

The two fans, Austin Capobianco and John Peter, were both ejected from the game and prevented from attending the rest of the series, which only lasted one additional game. Capobianco became the one more personally associated with the infamous moment as he was the one who directly put the safety of Betts at risk.

After initially basking in the notoriety that came from that moment, Capobianco has since backtracked and is trying to distance himself from his role in the event, according to Brendan Kuty of the Athletic:

“I’m a hero in Yankees land. I’m a villain in America,” he said. “I don’t really care. I just want to be forgotten about. That’s it. I want people to forget about me.”

The whole situation was far and away the most egregious example of fan interference that MLB has ever seen. More often than not, the interference is incidental as the fan attempts to catch the ball and impedes upon the player’s ability to make a play.

Not in recent memory has a fan grabbed at a player in an attempt to break up the play. Not to mention that the play had already been made, with the ball in Betts’ glove by the time Capobianco and Peter grab him.

Yankees fans who grabbed Mookie Betts are banned from MLB stadiums indefinitely

The pair of fans have since received an indefinite ban from the league, preventing them attending any MLB game at any stadium.
