Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr Recalls Pitching At Dodger Stadium In High School

The 2018 NBA Finals concluded on Friday with the Golden State Warriors completing a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers to capture back-to-back championships and their third in the past four years.

For Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, the title marks his eighth in the NBA after previously winning five during his playing days with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. Prior to his success in basketball, Kerr was a multi-sport athlete at Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles.

He recently recalled pitching at Dodger Stadium during a city championship game, which began on a positive note before turning for the worst, via 95.7 The Game:

“A lot of people don’t know this, but I pitched 4.2 innings in high school in a city championship game at Dodger Stadium. I actually did not give up an earned run, which is the good news. The bad news is I gave up eight unearned runs. After a two-out error, they hit, like, seven straight rockets off me. Including a two-run double off the wall by a guy named Bret Saberhagen who pitched a no-hitter against us. So we lost 13-0.”

While yielding eight unearned runs is far from ideal, Kerr can take solace in the fact that a future Major League All-Star in Bret Saberhagen did most of the damage against him.

Saberhagen enjoyed a 16-year Major League career that spanned three different decades. Among his many accolades include winning a World Series championship in 1985 with the Kansas City Royals, tossing a no-hitter in 1991 and earning two Cy Young Awards.

While Kerr’s baseball career didn’t quite pan out, it’s safe to say he had an excellent backup plan in place with basketball.
