Tyler Glasnow Providing Dodgers With Bonafide Ace

Tyler Glasnow is currently on pace to have the best season of his career in his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He completed seven innings of two-run ball on Tuesday against the New York Mets. Glasnow also had eight strikeouts and limited the Mets to just two hits, but did give up four walks.

It was another fantastic outing turned in by the Dodgers’ ace, who now has a 3.04 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 95 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. He is also on track to make the most starts and throw the most innings of his career.

The amount of starts don’t really come as a surprise because of the fact that Glasnow has been healthy in 2024, and hopefully he is able to remain that way. The right-hander has a well-known injury history and as a result, his most games started in a season is 21.

What has been really impressive is how deep he has gone into games on average this season. Glasnow has very similar numbers to the ones he had in 2021, which could have been his best as a professional until he needed Tommy John surgery.

In 2024, he is among the league leaders in terms of innings pitched and has been a starter that the Dodgers can rely on to pitch deep into games for the most part. Glasnow’s ability to shorten games for the bullpen has been extremely valuable, especially this year with the amount of injuries the Dodgers have been dealing with and the high-leverage options they continue to be without.

Glasnow has had better seasons in terms of ERA, but those seasons were limited in starts. His ERA this season has been skewed a bit due to a couple of poor performances against the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds.

Outside of those two starts, has allowed three runs or less 10 of his 12 starts and is just outside the top 25 in terms of ERA.

The Dodgers needed an ace after 2023’s lack of reliable pitching options, which is why they paid the high price to acquire Glasnow and extend him. So far, the early returns are looking like it was the correct decision.

Tyler Glasnow’s command

There have been a couple times this season where the command has not been there for Glasnow, but looking at his season overall he has made some great strides in terms of limiting walks. He has walked batters at a 6.5% clip this season, which is the second best mark of his career and a full percentage point better than last season.
