Mookie Betts was in the running for a seventh career Gold Glove Award and first at shortstop, but he was bested by Masyn Winn of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cesar Izturis remains the only shortstop in Los Angeles Dodgers franchise history to ever win a Gold Glove. Betts was looking to join the short list after an impressive first season at the position.

The entire list of Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners for the 2025 season were announced Sunday night. Miguel Rojas was a finalist for as a utility player, but that went to the Miami Marlins’ Javier Sanoja.

Gold Glove winners for the nine standard positions are determined through voting by MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team. Managers and coaches cannot vote for their own players and are only permitted to submit ballots for those in their same league.

Those votes amount to 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index accounting for the remaining 25%.

For the utility Gold Glove Award, Rawlings collaborates with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.

The Chicago Cubs led all teams with six players named as finalists for a 2025 Gold Glove Award. The Toronto Blue Jays led the American League with five finalists.

Mookie Betts falls short for shortstop Gold Glove

Betts was a finalist at shortstop along with Winn and the Atlanta Braves’ Nick Allen. The Gold Glove was a first for Winn in his young career.

He led all National League shortstops with 21 outs above average. It was second overall among MLB shortstops to only Kansas City Royals All-Star Bobby Witt Jr. (24).

Betts being under consideration for the hardware didn’t come as much of a surprise considering he graded favorably in several defensive metrics.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Taylor Walls and Betts tied for the MLB lead at shortstop with +17 defensive runs saved.

“It’s cool,” Betts had said of being a finalist for the NL Gold Glove Award at shortstop. “Like I said, I don’t really care about it. I’m just doing my job. That’s how I kind of view it. But I mean, it’s cool.

“If I win a Gold Glove at short, that will be something I can definitely tell my son I was able to do one in the infield and one in the outfield. But at the end of the day, the World Series is what’s the most important.”

Although Betts fell short for a Gold Glove, he did win a Fielding Bible Award at shortstop.
