On January 25, 2014, then-Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully was among those on hand for the first ever NHL Stadium Series game at Dodger Stadium for a matchup featured the L.A. Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

The 2014 NHL season saw six outdoor games, with four falling under the Stadium Series umbrella. The historic meeting at Dodger Stadium represented the first first regular season outdoor NHL game in the United States that was held west of the Mississippi.

Scully, fellow Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Miller, Wayne Gretzky and the Spirit of Troy USC marching band were part of opening ceremonies. KISS and Five for Fighting performed before the puck dropped.

“Hi everybody, and a very pleasant good evening to you,” began Scully, to a standing ovation. “Especially a warm welcome to you hockey fans. Here at Dodger Stadium we welcome you with open arms.

“Some of the great moments in sports and entertainment have occurred right here in this iconic landmark, and tonight we will present a game of hockey. The game that will set us on our ears. A game like no other.”

The Ducks went on for a 3-0 win, with goalie Jonas Hiller making 36 saves.

The Kings, who played in one of the first outdoor games in modern NHL history when they faced the New York Rangers in the parking lot at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas on Sept. 21, 1991, also took part in the Stadium Series in 2015 and again in 2020.

Kings annually host Dodgers Night

Another tie between the Kings and Dodgers is both teams annually hosting a night to celebrate the other.

Over the years, Dodgers Night has seen Chase Utley, Jaime Jarrín and others take part in dropping the ceremonial puck.
