The Texas Rangers announced the signing of Andrew Heaney to a two-year contract through the 2024 season. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Heaney’s contract is worth a reported $25 million base and can increase $37 million through incentives.

Heaney additionally holds an opt-out clause after the 2023 season. He reportedly had several contract offers after a successful season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and was said to prefer a short-term deal.

Heaney bounced back from a rough year to together a productive 2022 season that saw him pitch to a 3.10 ERA, 3.75 FIP, and 1.09 WHIP over 16 games (14 starts).

Among starting pitchers that logged at least 60 innings this past season, Heaney had the third-highest strikeout-to-walk ratio at 28.5%, behind only Jacob deGrom and Atlanta Braves rookie Spencer Strider.

The Rangers signing the southpaw came on the heels of adding deGrom to their starting rotation as well.

“Andrew is an important addition to the staff as we continue improving our roster for the 2023 season,” Rangers executive vice president and general manager Chris Young said in a statement.

“He was one of the most effective pitchers in the Majors over the final two months last season, and we look forward to working with Andrew on carrying that momentum into next year.”

Andrew Heaney part of Dodgers exodus

Heaney is one of two starters and four pitchers overall the Dodgers have lost in free agency thus far. Tyler Anderson signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, Chris Martin joined the Boston Red Sox on a two-year deal, and Tommy Kahnle returned to the New York Yankees.

Clayton Kershaw was re-signed to a one-year contract for 2023, but the Dodgers still face a need in their starting rotation.

Manager Dave Roberts suggested that’s likely to be addressed through a value-type signing similar to what the Dodgers found with Anderson prior to the 2022 season.
