Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Lose To Mariners In Blake Snell’s First Start

Not that game results are a focus, but another marquee Los Angeles Dodgers Spring Training debut was spoiled as the Seattle Mariners cruised to an 11-5 win at Camelback Ranch.

Blake Snell completed just one inning in his first start for the Dodgers. The southpaw was pleased with his fastball velocity but noted he needed continued work with landing offspeed pitches.

That was a factor in Snell getting ahead 0-2 against all four batters faced, but struggling to put each away. That was particularly true against J.P. Crawford as he led off the game with a nine-pitch at-bat that ended on a groundout.

Snell stranded a two-out single by Randy Arozarena to complete his scoreless inning of work on 30 pitches.

“Felt good. Fastball was coming out good. That was really my main concern, to see how that plays, see where I’m at,” Snell said after the outing.

“I was looking at velo more than I thought I was going to, but yeah, happy where that’s at. Just land the offspeed and I think I’m finding I’m right where I need to be. So threw in the bullpen after to work on that, excited for the next one.”

Sloppy defense by the Mariners allowed the Dodgers to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Seattle responded with four runs in the second. They tacked on another in the third inning on Mitch Garver’s leadoff home run against Ben Casparius.

Miguel Rojas and Austin Barnes each hit an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, but the Dodgers didn’t score again until well after the Mariners broke the game open in the seventh.

Justin Wrobleski, who made his MLB debut last season, pitched two scoreless innings in his second game of the spring.

L.A. is now 1-5 in Cactus League play this year. Their lone win came Sunday against the San Diego Padres, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Upcoming Dodgers schedule of games

Next for the Dodgers is a visit to American Family Fields of Phoenix for a matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers. They remain on the road Thursday to face the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields before returning to Camelback Ranch for their first night game of 2025 Spring Training as the Dodgers play the Los Angeles Angels.
