Recap: Shohei Ohtani Strikes Out 9 & Scores A Run As Dodgers Sweep Reds

Shohei Ohtani lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a sweep over the Cincinnati Reds as the two-way player struck out nine hitters and scored a run in the 5-1 victory.

Ohtani made it through five innings, allowing just one run on two hits while walking two. The only run he allowed came in the third inning when he allowed a solo shot to Noelvi Marte that put the Reds up 1-0.

But the Reds couldn’t create many scoring opportunities against him, as evident by his strikeout numbers. The only time they put a runner in scoring position was after a pair of walks in the second, but the next two hitters struck out to end the inning.

Ohtani also started the Dodgers’ four-run inning in the fourth inning with a leadoff single. That was followed by singles from Teoscar Hernández and Andy Pages to load the bases with one out.

Kiké Hernández then delivered by driving in two runs with a single. Miguel Rojas was intentionally walked to load the bases again, and Dalton Rushing singled home two more runs to put the Dodgers up 4-1.

Michael Conforto added onto the Dodgers lead with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Following Ohtani, the Dodgers relied on three rookies to get them to the ninth inning. Jack Dreyer pitched the sixth, Justin Wrobleski had the seventh and Edgardo Henriquez took the eighth, each of them pitching a scoreless inning.

Wrobleski did run into trouble by allowing two hits and a walk in his inning, but got out of it with two strikeouts. He also allowed a single to begin the eighth before Henriquez took over.

Blake Treinen was given the ninth and allowed two baserunners, but picked up three strikeouts and didn’t allow a run to score.

The Dodgers totaled 19 strikeouts in the game, their most in a nine-inning game since striking out 18 in 2015.

Dodgers complete comeback to sweep Reds

The Dodgers now have their first four-game winning streak since accomplishing the feat from June 29-July 3. The Dodgers have also won a Major League leading 42nd comeback victory of the season

The Dodgers also became the first team in baseball to sweep the Reds this season, and it’s their first sweep over the Reds at Dodger Stadium since April 14-17, 2022. Last night, the Dodgers clinched the season series with the Reds for the first time since 2022, and have now gone 5-1 against them.
