Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff home run for the second consecutive game and Yoshinobu Yamamoto again played the role of stopper for the Los Angeles Dodgers. That amounted to a snapping a two-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians in their Memorial Day matchup.
Ohtani’s home run in the first inning gave him an MLB-leading 19th of the season. Ohtani’s game-opening blast against the New York Mets came on the second pitch, whereas he ambushed the first offering from Gavin Williams on Monday.
Ohtani went 1-for-3 with the home run and two walks. The Dodgers as team tied a season high with eight walks. Williams issued a career-worst six of those across his 4.2 innings pitched.
Andy Pages added an RBI single in the second inning to put the Dodgers ahead 2-0, and Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy each drove in a run during the fifth. L.A. pushed across two more in the sixth inning behind respective RBI base hits from Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.
A 6-1 lead by that point was more than enough cushion for Yamamoto. He held the Guardians to just three hits, with two of them coming in the bottom of the sixth.
One was José Ramírez’s sinking line drive to right field that dropped in front of Hernández despite likely being a ball that should’ve been caught for the final out. It led to a run when Kyle Manzardo followed with an RBI single and likely cost Yamamoto another inning due to needing to throw extra pitches.
It nevertheless was a seventh time in 11 starts this season that Yamamoto completed at least six innings. The quality start was his third of the year.
Chris Taylor joins Dodgers-Angels history
The Los Angeles Angels signed Chris Taylor to a Major League contract for the remainder of the 2025 season. With that, Taylor reunites with former Dodgers teammate Kenley Jansen, who joined the Angels during the offseason.
Taylor was the longest-tenured Dodgers position player at the time he was released from the organization. He inherited that title from Austin Barnes, who was designated for assignment and remains a free agent.
