Recap: Matt Beaty Hits Home Run In Dodgers’ Loss To Cardinals

The Los Angeles Dodgers were kept in check by John Gant and suffered a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, which sets the stage for a rubber match Wednesday in the finale of their seven-game homestand.

John Gant pitched through some traffic early as the Dodgers had at least one baserunner in each of the first four innings. Gant finally retired the side in order in the fifth, then got defensive help to prevent the Dodgers from pulling even in the sixth inning.

After Mookie Betts led off with a single, Tommy Edman made a leaping catch to rob Max Muncy of a hit. Will Smith doubled with two outs, but it hurt the Dodgers as the ball hopped over the short wall in left field.

That was magnified even more when Gavin Lux hit a blooper into shallow right-center field that Dylan Carlson made a sliding catch on to prevent a game-tying single from dropping in.

A bullpen game panned out relatively well for the Dodgers despite David Price struggling in his third start. Manager Dave Roberts hoped to get three innings from Price, who couldn’t make it past two.

His command was off early and the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning behind three consecutive hits to open the game. Carlson’s two-out RBI single in the second inning doubled St. Louis’ lead and knocked Price out of the game.

After squandering several opportunities throughout the night, Matt Beaty followed Albert Pujols’ walk with a game-tying home run in the seventh inning.

A combination of Joe Kelly, Phil Bickford, Nate Jones, Mitch White and Blake Treinen initially tossed 6.1 scoreless innings. However, Treinen remained in the game to start the ninth and wound up allowing a decided run.

The Dodgers put two on in the bottom of the ninth but Betts was robbed of a hit by Tyler O’Neill making a running catch in left field.
