Recap: Dodgers Lose Season Series To Pirates

Julio Urías bobblehead night got off to a rough start for the left-hander as he surrendered two early home runs that amounted to a deficit the Los Angeles Dodgers couldn’t overcome in a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

With Ke’Bryan Hayes on base after a leadoff walk, Michael Chavis slugged a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Pirates up. Then one night removed from hitting his first career home run, Tucupita Marcano took Urías deep for a two-run shot in the second inning.

Tuesday marked a second consecutive game the Dodgers fell trailed 4-0. Like Walker Buehler in the series opener, Urías kept Pittsburgh off the board after allowing the two home runs. That was despite not retiring the side in order until the fifth inning.

Urías got through six innings with eight strikeouts to go along with the costly four runs allowed.

Pirates starter entered the night 1-5 with 6.05 ERA this season but held the Dodgers to two hits over five innings. Both of those were to Trea Turner, who extended his hitting streak to an MLB-best 23 games.

One of Turner’s hits was a two-run home run in the third inning. Turner nearly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth but his drive to center field was caught on the warning track.

The Dodgers had runners at the corners with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth but could only score one run that came when Justin Turner raced home on a Kevin Pillar strikeout-passed ball.

Freddie Freeman could have sparked a potential rally in the seventh inning but was thrown out trying to stretch a leadoff single into a double.

Bryan Reynolds’ two-out RBI double off David Price in the ninth provided some cushion for the Pirates, who didn’t have closer David Bednar available due to pitching two innings on Monday.

Dodgers unable to solve Pennsylvania

The Dodgers closed the month of May a combined 4-8 against the Philadelphia Phillies and Pirates, but 16-1 against opponents not from the state of Pennsylvania.
