Recap: Julio Urías Matches Career High With 12 Strikeouts, Dodgers Sweep Rockies

Julio Urías had his scoreless innings streak snapped but matched a career high with 12 strikeouts as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies, 8-3, to complete a four-game series sweep.

The Dodgers also extended their season-best winning streak to eight games in the process. Prior to the current stretch, L.A. had three separate winning streaks of six games.

Urías was sharp early before allowing a run in the third inning and two-run homer in the fourth that tied the game. Alan Trejo’s two-run came on an 0-1 changeup that hung over the middle of the plate.

The pitch still resonated with Urías as he ended the fourth inning by fielding a comebacker and firing it over to first base. He channeled that frustration into the ensuing innings by striking out seven batters in a row.

Trejo’s fly ball for the second out in the seventh inning snapped Urías’ streak. He came right back to catch Elehuris Montero for a 12th strikeout on the day.

Aaron Harang holds the Dodgers franchise record with nine strikeouts in a row, set April 13, 2012. Harang broke Johnny Podres’ Dodgers record of eight consecutive strikeouts that had been in place since July 2, 1962.

Urías originally set his career high of 12 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs on June 26, 2021.

Offensively, Max Muncy’s RBI single in the second inning provided the Dodgers with an initial lead. He then scored when Miguel Rojas hit a pop fly back of second base that was deemed an out via infield fly rule.

Although the Rockies received an out, Brendan Rodgers lost the ball in the sun and it allowed Muncy to essentially tag up on the play.

Amed Rosario continued his strong showing since being traded to the Dodgers with an RBI single in the third Rojas hit his second home run of the season in the fourth to break a tie.

Rojas added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Mookie Betts delivered a two-run double with two outs. Betts was back in the lineup after missing Saturday’s game because of a stomach bug.

Rojas contributed with another sacrifice fly in the eighth to further pad the lead and finish with a game-high four RBI.

Dodgers achieve first since Vin Scully’s last home game

Prior to Sunday, the last time the Dodgers swept the Rockies in a four-game series was September 22-25, 2016.

That stretch ended with Charlie Culberson hitting a walk-off home run to clinch the National League West on Vin Scully’s final home game.
