Recap: Julio Urías Allows Back-To-Back Home Runs In Dodgers’ Loss To Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers squandered a lead in the first inning and it resulted in ending their road trip with a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in an afternoon affair at PNC Park. The Dodgers are back at .500 with a 13-13 record and have yet to win consecutive series this season.

David Peralta’s two-out single provided Julio Urías with a 2-0 lead before he threw a single pitch, but Austin Barnes’ error led to the Pirates quickly jumping ahead.

Bryan Reynolds immediately took advantage of the two-base throwing error by following the bunt single with an RBI base hit. Andrew McCutchen then singled and the Pirates pulled off a double steal that paid dividends when Rodolfo Castro’s sacrifice fly tied the game.

The Pirates finished the series with 12 stolen bases, becoming the latest team to exploit a Dodgers’ weakness.

Urías was the victim of more bad luck as Jack Suwinski’s check swing produced a blooper into left field that dropped for a two-out RBI single. Urías needed 26 pitches to get through the first inning but followed that with only five in the second.

He remained on cruise control until giving up a two-run home run to Connor Joe and solo shot to Castro in the sixth inning. It marked a third consecutive start in which Urías surrendered back-to-back homers.

After going 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his first three starts, Urías entered 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in his two most recent outings. The six earned runs allowed to the Pirates marked the most Urías has given up in a single start since the San Diego Padres also scored that many on June 21, 2021.

Urías has taken a loss in three consecutive starts for the first time in his career. The Pirates also had success against the southpaw last season, as he went 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts.

Dodgers lineup waiting on reinforcements

What’s been an inconsistent Dodgers offense expects to welcome back Max Muncy and Will Smith to the lineup this weekend. Muncy is due to return from the paternity list for the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, and Smith is on track to be activated off the concussion injured list Saturday.
