Recap: James Outman’s Grand Slam Helps Dodgers End Homestand With Series Win Against Twins

A Dustin May injury thrusted the Los Angeles Dodgers into a second unexpected bullpen game in the past week, but they again weathered the storm to get a 7-3 win over the Minnesota Twins thanks in large part to a grand slam from James Outman.

The Dodgers finished their successful homestand by winning a sixth consecutive series. They have not lost a series since dropping two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park from April 25-27.

The Twins took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning thanks to a Caleb Ferguson throwing error when it appeared he had Willi Castro picked off. However, Ferguson’s throw to Max Muncy was wide of the bag and it allowed Castro to score the go-ahead run.

Back-to-back singles by Will Smith and Muncy wound up sparking a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Jason Heyward’s walk loaded the bases, and Miguel Vargas’ free pass brought in the tying run.

Outman then sent the first pitch he saw from Emilio Pagán sailing over the fence in center field for what held as a game-winning grand slam.

The Dodgers lead the Majors with five grand slams this season. It was Outman’s second grand slam of his career, with both being hit this year, and it came amid a 1-for-15 skid.

Prior to the five-run seventh inning, the Dodgers had scored on Freddie Freeman’s sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI single from Mookie Betts in the fourth.

Dodgers face Dustin May injury

May pitched just one inning before being removed due to right elbow pain. Aside from May’s velocity being slightly down in a scoreless first inning, there weren’t any clear signs of trouble.

May allowed a one-out single and collected two strikeouts while throwing 16 pitches in his lone inning of work.

He was followed by Dylan Covey, who had just been added to the active roster Wednesday with Justin Bruihl getting optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Covey allowed two runs on five hits over four-plus innings in his first Major League appearance since 2020.

After already allowing a game-tying leadoff home run to Joey Gallo, the right-hander exited with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth inning. Victor González, pitching for a second consecutive game and third time in the last four days, stranded all of the inherited runners.
