Recap: Gavin Stone Throws Shutout As Dodgers Sweep White Sox

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 4-0 win backed by a shutout from Gavin Stone and another solid day from the offense.

Stone has pitched at an ace-level all year, and that was no different during this game as he made the best start of his career. He tossed a complete game shutout while allowing just four hits and striking out seven without a walk.

It is the sixth time this season Stone has pitched into at least the seventh inning over his 15 starts, and his fifth time completing seven innings. However, it was the first time Stone has pitched into the eighth inning or later.

With his outing, Stone became the first Dodgers’ pitcher to toss a complete game shutout since Walker Buehler on April 25, 2022. He also became the first Dodgers rookie to toss a shutout since Hyun-Jin Ryu is 2013.

Stone’s seven strikeouts also tied his career-high as getting additional swing-and-miss is something he has been working on with Dodgers’ coaches.

Shohei Ohtani once again started the scoring with a leadoff home run, his 25th long ball of the season. It’s the eight home run for Ohtani in his last 10 games as he continues to be the hottest hitter in MLB.

The Dodgers broke the game open a bit with a three-run third inning. It was started by a pair of singles from Kiké Hernández and Austin Barnes before Ohtani walked to load the bases.

Teoscar Hernández, in his first game back in the lineup, hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

That was followed by Freddie Freeman doubling to double the lead as he drove in Barnes and Ohtani, making it a 4-0 game. That was all the Dodgers scored, and all they needed thanks to Stone.

Miguel Rojas also went 2-for-4 at the plate, so the Dodgers are now 24-0 when he gets a hit in a game.

Shohei Ohtani sets Dodgers consecutive RBI record

Othani also set a new Dodgers record for consecutive games with at least one RBI as his streak reached 10 during the game. Ohtani achieved the milestone with his leadoff home run, his second game in a row opening the night with a long ball.

He went into the series finale against the Chicago White Sox tied with Bob Fisher (1913), Eddie Brown (1924), Augie Galan (1944), Roy Campanella (1955) and Matt Kemp (2011-2012) for the Dodgers record of nine games in a row with an RBI.

He’s on pace to set new career highs in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, stolen bases and runs scored.
